3M system adopted in Indonesia

3M’s identity document issuance system is selected by the The Ministry of Transportation in Indonesia to verify the identity of Seafarers. The system converts fingerprints into a biometric template printed as a bar code on 3M’s Seafarers identity document (SID),3M.JPG allowing authorities to compare “live” fingerprints of the SID holder with the encoded data. “3M’s [system] will move Indonesia to the forefront of maritime security,” says Rich Sanders, business manager, 3M security systems division. “The rapid implementation of this system will help protect the Indonesian seafarers’ rights and grant them easier entry to foreign ports.” Developed at the St. Paul, Minnesota-based company’s identification and authentication business unit in Ottawa, the identity document issuance system will bring Indonesia into compliance with document standards set by the International Labour Organization.
