Buys new portfolio
IP licenser Wi-LAN buys 10 patents covering wireless technology for US$7 million. The acquisition will see many US manufactures of cellphones required to license one or more of the new patents from Ottawa-based Wi-LAN. Though such companies as Nokia and Siemens are currently licensing technology covered by the patents, Wi-LAN believes most cellular handsets sold in the US use the technology without a licence. The acquisition brings Wi-LAN's total portfolio to 237 patents.
