Mitel trims sails

OTTAWA – Mitel Networks lays off about 40 workers, 2% of its more than 2,000 employees worldwide. The cuts will affect employees at the Ottawa Mitel.jpgheadquarters, as well as staff in other offices. The company is also asking employees to work one day without pay every three weeks, in response to deteriorating market conditions. This is in addition to a decision last fall to require employees to take an unpaid day off every three weeks. Combined, the elimination of two days’ pay every three weeks amounts to a 13.3% pay reduction for affected employees. “The market has changed considerably since we made the adjustment in November, and it’s not getting better,” says Sandra Pacey, director of corporate marketing for Mitel. “The decision is based on how we can manage this business best so that we can weather this particularly difficult time.”
