Local talent lures gaming giant

KITCHENER – Electronic Arts Inc., one of the world’s largest developers and distributors of video games, opens an office in Kitchener. The California-based company, which has set up a modest operation (fewer than 10 employees) in a downtown space, says it was drawn to town by the strong talent base in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. The local team will reportedly be supporting EA’s online initiatives. While EA already employs some 2,600 workers in Canada, at development studios in Vancouver, Montreal and Edmonton, the Kitchener operation is the first established by the $4.2 billion company in Ontario. Founded in 1982, EA produces hundreds of gaming titles, including those based on movies, like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and sports-themed games featuring the likeness of superstars such as LeBron James and Tiger Woods.
