Skype onto something with tv-video calling

I’ve had the pleasure of using Cisco’s videocalling system, and the technology would appeal to anyone who could afford a permanent setup. Thanks to Skype and two television manufacturers (Panasonic and LG), consumers will soon begin to enjoy the benefits of their very own basic video conference platform (hat tip NYT).
There’s nothing novel anymore about streaming video, even over your television. But for the TV manufacturers, this is a smart move. It has been more than a few years and plenty of effort has gone into the concept, yet the personal computer crowd do not own the living room; they barely have a foot in the door. Perhaps there’s a reason for that.
Given the timing, Skype’s new owners (CPP Investment Board, etc.) must have known about this channel opportunity when they were considering the EBay buyout (Skype deal: is it a tech or infrastructure deal? Sept 2-09). Sounds like another good angle to ultimately convert Skype’s user base into a meatier source of revenue
